Indiana Section of the Mathematical Association of America
Distinguished Service Award
Citation to
Krystina Leganza
The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.
This year's recipient has served the section as Chair, Vice Chair, and Student Chapter Coordinator. She has been active at the national level, recently completing her second term on the MAA Committee on Teaching of Undergraduate Mathematics and beginning a new position on the Committee on Invited Papers Sessions. Additionally, she is an elected representative of the Congress of the MAA (2017-2020).
We are honored to give this award to Krystina (Krysi) Leganza. Krysi is currently the chair of the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Indianapolis. Her colleagues describe her as "an outstanding teacher of mathematics. She does an excellent job at balancing high expectations with student success. She genuinely cares about her students and devotes a lot of her time advising and mentoring them."
Krysi has promoted mathematics education through activities like summer camps for middle school students, Girls and Math Days, and faculty development workshops for high school and college mathematics teachers.
Her research interests include abstract algebra, mathematical pedagogy, and gender and mathematics. She has contributed to these areas.
Finally, Krysi has served her department and university well. In addition to acting as chair, she founded the Faculty Development Center for the university and sat on numerous committees, including the Promotion and Tenure Committee.
As seen through her contributions at the university, state, and national level, Krysi Leganza is well deserving of the 2019 Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award.
