Justin Gash

The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of, and improving education in, the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.

This year’s recipient has been an active contributor to the Indiana Section of the MAA since his arrival in 2008. He has served in a leadership role for Project NExT-IN, as Student Activities Coordinator, and on the Indiana Collegiate Mathematics Competition.

This year’s awardee is Justin Gash. Justin is currently the Division head of business, mathematics and computing at Franklin College. Justin has promoted student involvement in mathematics and service to the greater mathematical community. He was an integral part of the minicourses that Franklin’s department has conducted at MathFest, and his contributions to the department were instrumental in the department receiving the 2019 Award for an Exemplary Program in a Mathematics Department from the American Mathematical Society.

His research interests include computational algebra, cryptography, and pedagogy for college-level mathematics. He has given talks at colleges and high schools around the state.

Finally, Justin’s contributions have been recognized at his university. In addition to acting as division head, he has served as chair of the Faculty Steering Committee. For his contributions to outstanding teaching, scholarship, and service at Franklin College, he was awarded Franklin College’s Dietz Award for Faculty Excellence.

In recognition of his contributions to mathematics at the university, state, and national level, we congratulate Justin Gash as the recipient of the 2021 Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award.
