Amos Carpenter

The Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award was initiated in 1993 to honor a member of the Section by acknowledging his or her extraordinary contributions to the Section and outstanding efforts consistent with the stated purposes of the Mathematical Association of America and the Section, namely, assisting in promoting the interests of and improving education in the mathematical sciences in America, especially at the collegiate level.

The winner of the 2008 Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award has been invaluable to the department on his home campus. He served as Chair for 8 years from 1992-2000 and returned to this position this year. While his research interests are in Approximation Theory, Numerical Analysis, Parallel and Scientific Computing and the Theory of Computation, the list of courses he has taught presents both a history of Computer Science and a very real indication of the versatility he has brought to his campus. He has won awards recognizing him as an outstanding faculty member and as a faculty member who has been dedicated to his students. He served as managing editor of Electronic Transactions on Numerical Analysis from 2000 to 2005. Not only does he average at least one invited talk each year at universities in the United States, but he is also invited to speak at numerous international meetings.

His service to the Section has been equally extraordinary. He was the Public Information Officer for the Indiana Section from 1993-1996. He has served as both Vice Chair and Chair of the Section. He has also graciously welcomed the Section to his home campus. His regular contributions to our meetings have enriched our gatherings.

With thanks to our award winner for his dedication to mathematics and to our Section, we enthusiastically present the 2008 Indiana Section Distinguished Service Award to Amos Carpenter of Butler University.
